1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale

This lovely matching numbers 1965 Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale was purchased as a new car in May 1966 by an armed forces American stationed in Germany. He picked the car at Bertone and owned the Alfa until December 2014 when I became the second owner a few weeks later. Afa Romeo records show the car as having been built in January 1965 but not sold by the dealer until March 1966. The original Bill of Sale and cancelled check shows the sale date as May 1966 which I would think is more accurate. Perhaps the car remained unsold at Bertone for a year and a half or perhaps it was used by someone at Bertone and the odometer reset and sold as a new car .... we will never know.

In the records is a letter signed by Nuccio Bertone where the original owner was inquiring about purchasing paint for the car. A copy of that letter is in the gallery below.

I purchased the car and owned in for a couple of years and then sold it as I was not too happy with the way the car handled. It was purchased by Rodolfo de la Vega. Mr de la Vega was a well known collector. He purchased this car when he was 95 years young !

Unfortunately Mr de la Vega passed away and I found the car with a dealer in St Louis. Having fond memories of this SS, I bought it again.  Mr de la Vega had a grey leather interior installed which was an improvement over the incorrect vinyl interior it previously had. This time around I was determined to address the handling issues and also addressed the cosmetics in the engine compartment. The car received sports springs and torsion bar supplier by Classic Alfa in the UK, Pertronix ignition, the engine compartment was painted and detailed, new tires, drive shaft was balanced and bearing replaced, brake master rebuilt, radiator recored, carbs rebuild, new Pirelli tires, plus much more. It now drives and handles as it should.

The paint and chrome are in very nice condition.  I just love the paint color on this car!

Bill Pack, an automobile artist/photographer, took photos of the Alfa Sprint Speciale. This car was one of his favorites to photograph due to the many interesting details ... and the fact that this Alfa is drop dead gorgeous !! You can view his images by clicking here or on the this image.

In 2008 major mechanical work was performed, including a rebuilt of its original veloce engine. The engine only has less than 1,500 miles since that rebuilt. Click here for a copy of those invoices.
