This very late Ghibli SS was owned by a friend and fellow car enthusiast here in Atlanta for the last 25 years. Recently he decided to get rid of his cars and motorcycles and I acquired this Ghibli SS. As best we can tell the car has spent its entire life in the Atlanta area. My friend remembers seeing the car in the mid-70's being worked by Baker Motors, who was the Maserati importer in Atlanta. The original engine was blown when the car had approximately 5 years and it received an American engine at that time. The original 4.9 liter Maserati engine is included in the sale of this car. The engine is all apart and some parts are missing, but I do have a 4.9 liter engine from a Maserati Indy available to the purchaser of this car for $3500. The Indy engine is complete and all together.
About 10 years ago my friend had a GM 350 V8 built for this car with a Holley 4160 650cfm 4v carb, MSD ignition and GM 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission (same transmission as the Corvette). The engine was mounted on the original mounting points, no frame modifications were made. I am actually amazed on how well the GM 350 fits into the Ghibli engine bay. The installation workmanship was superb using the original components whenever possible. For example all the instrument gauges are the original and the sending units were coupled to the GM engine. The original radiator and cooling fans were retained. The GM power steering pump was nicely coupled to the ZF power steering rack and works very well. Just like the Pantera and the Iso Grifo, this car has the perfect blend of Italian "carrozzeria" beauty with American reliability.
I recently had the engine tuned since it had not been driven much over the last 5 years. The carb was rebuilt, ignition wires replaced, etc. The mechanic said the engine was like new internally after he checked the cylinders with a borescope and seeing the hatch marks on the cylinder walls. This engine has plenty of power, it actually feels very comparable to the 315HP Maserati engine.
The car was painted 10 years ago to very high standards and still looks extremely nice. There is no rust and body gaps are very good. The front and rear bumpers are straight but the chrome is average. Given how nice the paint is I would have the bumpers rechromed. Tires are Pirelli P5 (215/70 x 15) in good condition mounted on 72 spoke wire wheels. The wire wheels are in like new condition. Glass is in very good condition. The AC is connected and the compressor turns on but it is not blowing cold, probably low on freon. The seats and some of the interior panels were recovered in vinyl to match the original leather, the quality is quite good and I would leave them as is.
Car comes with some records and photo copies of factory manuals.
This very attractive car is ideal for the person looking for the timeless beauty of the Maserati Ghibli coupled with the reliability and performance of a tuned GM 350 engine. Put the key in and drive!!
