After the huge success of the Maserati Ghibli, customers started demanding a car with similar performance and looks but in a 2+2 configuration. Carrozeria Vignale was given the challenge of created the Indy to satisfy this demand. Vignale had already proven themselves with prior Maserati creations such as the Mexico and the 3500GT spyder., the Indy was to continue their tradition of excellent build quality and attention to details.
The Indy was offered with three engine configurations ... 4.2, 4.7 and 4.9 liters. This particular Indy has the more powerful 4.9 liter engine which is essentially the same power plant found on the Ghibli SS and the Bora. Unfortunately many Indy were fitted with a sluggish automatic transmission, this particular Indy has the superb ZF 5-speed manual transmission, a big advantage. To top it off the car also has the very desirable ZF power steering unit ... plus the usual luxury amenities such as power windows, air conditioner (which blows cold), full leather interior and an impressive
array of gauges and switches which would many any airplane pilot feel at home.
Car has 79K miles. I performed a compression test and the engine has very good compression (140 to 160 psi) across all eight cylinders. Oil pressure is also very good. Engine makes the type of sweet music only an Italian car with four Webers can make! Synchros and clutch are both in good working order. Interior is mostly original and in very good condition considering the age of the car. The paint has a good shine and is of average quality .... okay for a driver but definitely not up to show standards. All gauges (except clock) are working. Tires are as new Michellin Pilots. The spare tire is the original with little use. This Indy is a rather inexpensive way of experiencing Italian motoring at its best ... and have room to bring the kids!
